Are you wondering how you can sustainably reduce energy consumption during selective soldering?
With the selective cluster heating from SEHO!

In selective soldering processes, typically only individual components need to be soldered. The preheating process cannot be omitted for process-related reasons, but why preheat the entire assembly if the thermal energy is only required at a few points?

The selective cluster heating consists of a total of 30 small, energy efficient pulsar emitters that can be individually programmed for the smallest areas and switched on depending on the product.

This new heating concept is therefore not only particularly temperature-friendly for the assembly, but also significantly more energy efficient than any other preheating system: assembly areas that do not require heat are not heated up and therefore do not have to be cooled down after the soldering process, which saves additional energy.

SEHO is one of the most innovative companies in the industry. Some of the latest developments are aimed at taking cost-efficiency and energy-efficiency in the wave soldering process to a new level.

New pulsar emitters allow remarkably higher flexibility in the preheat area. Configuring emitters individually instead of using entire segments helps to realize the shortest distances between assemblies. Thus, there is virtually no wait time required between assemblies with different heat energy demands, ensuring highest energy-efficiency. This preheating concept allows for the cost-efficient and sustainable manufacture of large series as well as a batch size of one.

SEHO’s new automatic nozzle height adjustment provides higher flexibility in the soldering area of wave solder systems, particularly if a large number of different variants are to be manufactured. The height of each solder nozzle can be adjusted via the software, which allows creating the optimal product-specific distance between the circuit board and solder nozzle. This innovative function provides independence from the workpiece carrier or assembly design, a remarkably larger process window, maximum flexibility and process reliability.

Consistent height of the solder wave is crucial for wave soldering processes. SEHO provides the first automatic wave height measurement, built into the soldering section of the MWS 2300. This feature is based on a contact measurement that produces reliable results and processes for laminar as well as turbulent solder waves. Based on the measuring results, the wave height is automatically regulated within adjustable tolerances. The system thereby ensures the same height across the entire wave width at any time. The complete logging of all measured values and parameters also provides a proof of quality of the manufactured products.

SEHO was awarded a GLOBAL Technology Award in the category of Selective Soldering for its new SmartSplit.

SEHO SmartSplit is an intelligent software that controls and coordinates the process sequence for different assemblies in mixed operation. This newly developed software component turns an efficient system for batch production into an innovative selective soldering system for high-mix-high-volume production, without retrofitting and without additional costs.

SmartSplit automatically distributes the various process tasks, such as flux deposition, soldering process with up to six soldering units and selective brushing process, to the available process stations that are integrated in the individual machine. As a result, SEHO SmartSplit allows high mix – high volume production in selective soldering processes by cutting the cycle times in half. This amazing new function can be integrated in the SelectLine-C machine platform as well as the new LeanSelect-plus.

The space-saving conception of the individual process stations minimizes floor space costs. In addition, several soldering units in a system can use one service station centrally. A further advantage of the SmartSplit software is its programming simplicity. Only the overall soldering task has to be programmed for an assembly.

The GLOBAL Technology Awards have recognized the very best new innovations in the printed circuit assembly and packaging industries since 2005. The prestigious awards contest has been bringing together the global SMT and advanced packaging industry in a celebration of the companies and people that are achieving the highest standards and driving our industry forward. Siemens Motion Control in Erlangen, Nuremberg, develops exciting manufacturing model for goal-driven, digital manufacturing.

Pioneering new methods, setting new standards for efficiency, taking on new challenges: This is the foundation of the success of the Digital Industry Division at Siemens Motion Control in Erlangen. Drawing on innovative ideas and manufacturing concepts that were implemented together with SEHO, the company enters the home stretch on its way to the lean digital factory.

One of the hightlights at the Siemens Erlangen production plant is the new THT line made by SEHO. It is designed for the matrix manufacturing concept that is Siemens’ goal. The line is expandable and its degree of automation is successively scalable. “We worked very closely with SEHO on the realization of this line. This allowed us to implement a concept that alligns perfectly with our corporate strategy: flexible automation for a lean, digital factory”, says Werner Eckert, manufacturing technology expert at Siemens Erlangen.

The new manufacturing concept allows to assemble the different product types in variable quantities with great efficiency, thus allowing flexible reaction to customer requirements.

SEHO SelectLine provides many new and innovative features.

With the SelectLine platform, SEHO developed a selective soldering system that convinces with the highest precision and solder joint quality, and features maximum flexibility even for unusual assembly dimensions.
The SelectLine machine concept is consistently modular thus ensuring clear cost benefits. Several modules with different dimensions can individually be configurated with fluxer, preheatings, soldering units, cooling modules, selective brush unit and AOI system. Thus, the SelectLine adapts to virtually any manufacturing requirement and if the production conditions should change it may be expanded, the configuration can be modified, or SelectLine modules can be shifted to different manufacturing lines at any time. Up to 6 soldering units and more than 15 parallel workstations can be integrated in one system.

Added value
„It is our aim to continuously create added value for our customers by constantly implementing innovative ideas”, says Alexander Blum, Product Manager Selective Soldering Equipment at SEHO. Many of these innovative ideas are integrated in the SelectLine and have made the selective soldering machine one of the most successful within the SEHO portfolio.

High mix – high volume
Electro-magnetic soldering units with innovative nozzles for mini-wave and multi-wave soldering processes are part of the standard machine equipment. Maximum throughput requirements are met with the Synchro concept, patented by SEHO. This intelligent software feature coordinates the soldering process with several soldering units for one assembly type in such a way that the cycle time is nearly halved without the need for significant investment. If different products are manufactured in mixed operation, the SmartSplit function ensures automatic split of the available soldering units, thus providing maximum throughput rates.

Increased lifetime and reduced costs
Automatic ultrasonic cleaning of solder nozzles is another highlight in the soldering area. What previously had to be done manually and with aggressive chemicals, is automatically and environmentally friendly performed through the machine. The solder nozzle is gently cleaned and completely re-wetted.
The SelectLine is ideally suited for using the new LongLife mini-wave solder nozzle. This new nozzle features a lifetime that is at least three times longer than that of conventional nozzles. Therefore, the annual savings potential is remarkable. Maintenance requirements for the new nozzle are significantly reduced. The LongLife solder nozzle does not need to be cleaned or re-activated throughout a complete production shift. In addition, there is no activation needed prior to production start.

Ready for furture applications
Moreover, the SelectLine is perfectly prepared for the constantly growing requirements in the manufacturing of next-generation products, such as 5G antennas or LED technology. By means of an automatic software switch the system is able to process virtually endlessly long PCBs. The software automatically coordinates and optimizes the assembly transport and the positioning of the process stations. As the individual processing stations thereby do not have to match the actual length of the assemblies, the SelectLine stands out for its very compact design. This minimizes production floor costs, resulting in an excellent cost-efficiency.

Reliable processes and integrated additional processes: SEHO SelectLine
Like all selective soldering systems from SEHO, the SelectLine provides a complete hardware and software package for 100% automated process control. The flux quantity monitoring system and gradient-controlled temperature profiles in the preheat area, automatic monitoring of the nitrogen quantity and nitrogen quality, the touchless wave height control or automatic setup control and tool measurement are only some of the monitoring functions that ensure a reliable process.

The SelectLine, however, has even more to offer: The machine can be equipped with a selective brush system for automatic removal of solder balls and an AOI system for automatic inspection of solder joints immediately after the soldering or brushing process. The advantages of these integrated additional processes are obvious: Safe and reliable processes on the one hand, and reduced overall production costs on the other hand.
